Scaling Laws and Intermittency in Highly Compressible Turbulence

چکیده
We use large-scale three-dimensional simulations of supersonic Euler turbulence to get a better understanding of the physics of a highly compressible cascade. Our numerical experiments describe non-magnetized driven turbulent flows with an isothermal equation of state and an rms Mach number of 6. We find that the inertial range velocity scaling deviates strongly from the incompressible Kolmogorov laws. We propose an extension of Kolmogorov’s K41 phenomenology that takes into account compressibility by mixing the velocity and density statistics and preserves the K41 scaling of the density-weighted velocity v ≡ ρ1/3u. We show that low-order statistics of v are invariant with respect to changes in the Mach number. For instance, at Mach 6 the slope of the power spectrum of v is −1.69 and the third-order structure function of v scales linearly with separation. We directly measure the mass dimension of the “fractal” density distribution in the inertial subrange, Dm ≈ 2.4, which is similar to the observed fractal dimension of molecular clouds and agrees well with the cascade phenomenology.

Ordinary and Viscosity-damped Mhd Turbulence
We compare the properties of ordinary strong magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in a strongly magnetized medium with the recently discovered viscosity-damped regime. We focus on energy spectra, anisotropy, and intermittency. Our most surprising conclusion is that in ordinary strong MHD turbulence the velocity and magnetic fields show different high-order structure function scalings. Moreover ...
متن کاملNew Perspectives in Turbulence: Scaling Laws, Asymptotics, and Intermittency
Intermittency, a basic property of fully developed turbulent flow, decreases with growing viscosity; therefore classical relationships obtained in the limit of vanishing viscosity must be corrected when the Reynolds number is finite but large. These corrections are the main subject of the present paper. They lead to a new scaling law for wall-bounded turbulence, which is of key importance in en...
متن کاملInertial Range Scaling, Kármán-Howarth Theorem and Intermittency for Forced and Decaying Lagrangian Averaged MHD in 2D
We present an extension of the Kármám-Howarth theorem to the Lagrangian averaged magnetohydrodynamic (LAMHD−α) equations. The scaling laws resulting as a corollary of this theorem are studied in numerical simulations, as well as the scaling of the longitudinal structure function exponents indicative of intermittency. Numerical simulations are presented both for freely decaying and for forced tw...
متن کاملLog-stable law of energy dissipation as a framework of turbulence intermittency.
To describe the small-scale intermittency of turbulence, a self-similarity is assumed for the probability density function of a logarithm of the rate of energy dissipation smoothed over a length scale among those in the inertial range. The result is an extension of Kolmogorov's classical theory [A. N. Kolmogorov, Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 30, 301 (1941)], i.e., a one-parameter framework where the l...
متن کاملIntermittency and turbulence in a magnetically confined fusion plasma
We investigate the intermittency of magnetic turbulence as measured in reversed field pinch plasmas. We show that the probability distribution functions of magnetic field differences are not scale invariant; that is, the wings of these functions are more important at the smallest scales, a classical signature of intermittency. We show that scaling laws appear also in a region very close to the ...
